Behind The Guitar: President Obama’s Inaugural Ball

In 2009, Party on the Moon was honored to perform at the Presidential Inaugural Ball for President Barack Obama. The atmosphere in Washington, D.C., was electric, and the show came together at the last minute—we weren’t quite sure what to expect.

When we arrived at the convention center stage, we noticed another setup directly across the dance floor—two drum kits, multiple keyboards, guitars—clearly prepared for something big. After our soundcheck, the producer briefed us on show times and the all-important moment when the President and First Lady would take the floor and dance to the classic “At Last.” Their appearance was part of a carefully choreographed sequence across multiple ballrooms that night, so timing was everything.

The ballroom was packed with energy. As we finished our first set, the band across the room launched into theirs. After a short instrumental intro, Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony took the stage—and the crowd erupted. True superstars in action.

Curious about what was happening elsewhere, I wandered into the neighboring ballrooms. One featured Stevie Wonder and Sting performing together with the David Letterman Band. Another hosted Bon Jovi. It was a surreal and unforgettable night.

Over the years, Party on the Moon has had the honor of performing for five U.S. Presidents. Each event came with its own unique challenges and unforgettable surprises. What stands out most is the level of precision and professionalism—from the Secret Service to the event planners and vendors—all working in harmony to deliver something truly extraordinary.

If there's one lesson I’ve learned as a bandleader, it’s this: Have a plan. Prepare thoroughly. Stay flexible. And always be ready for the unexpected.
