Behind The Guitar: Sharing the Stage with Sammy Hagar
We recently had the honor of performing in Norman, OK for the Toby Keith Foundation, which supports OK Kids Korral—a home that provides comfort and care for children battling cancer.
Sammy Hagar, a longtime friend of Toby’s, served as MC and performed songs from his solo catalog, Van Halen classics, and even a Toby Keith tune.
At soundcheck, Sammy told the band, “Guys, I don’t take my music seriously—let’s have fun. If you make a mistake, it’ll just make it more interesting.” I’ve never been around a performer who was more laid-back and genuinely joyful.
But when the lights came on and Sammy hit the stage, make no mistake—he’s a bona fide rock star. He was completely focused and spontaneous, with a childlike energy that was contagious. In that moment, I knew I was in the presence of something special.
Sammy reminded me that who we are and what we create are two separate things. That perspective makes it easier to stay objective, create freely, and let the chips fall where they may.
Sammy and his wife Kari founded The Hagar Family Foundation in 2008, focusing on food relief and children’s causes. In 2024, they were honored with The Tilly Life Center Award for their incredible work.
The event was a huge success, raising over $1.4 million. I love being part of events that celebrate making a difference in the world. To share the stage with an artist who’s not only a rock legend, but also a genuinely good person making a real impact—that’s the best kind of gig.
Thanks, Sammy!
